Benefit's erase paste concealer + Colour correcting hype?

Hi everyone!
This review is going to be on Benefit's erase paste. This claims to be a highlighting + camouflage for the eyes and face. This retails at £20.50 currently. Further on in the blog post I will also be giving my opinion on colour correcting and how to correctly apply different tones to different areas of the face. Enjoy!

So this is what the product looks like. It comes in three shades. Fair, medium and deep. I have the shade fair as I have fair skin. This is supposed to highlight and or camouflage any areas on the face or eyes. With this being £20.50, I expected this to work really well as I have quite dark dull under eyes. Did it work? Do I like this? Lets find out

Good points
To start off with I think the packaging is super cute, small and convenient. The pinks an purples really give this a feminine touch. Even though the packaging is small, you get loads of product. I can gaurentee you can have this concealer for a while without needing a new one. A little of this product does go along way saving you product. Lets talk formulation. The colour of this concealer would be described as a salmon toned product. This is to help camouflage darker areas on the skin. This is why this is the perfect coloured concealer to brighten and correct any issued areas. I only use this under my eyes only. The colouration of this product really does a good job of correcting my darker dull areas around and underneath my eyes. What I like about the formula is that it blends out so well. This is such an easy buildable product and blends like a dream. It makes the eye area look hydrated and corrected if need be. Benefit advise you to use this over the top of liquid foundation but I apply underneath only due to various reasons as I will state in the bad points section of this review. I apply this concealer with a sigma e70 concealer brush and I find that it picks up enough product to place around the under eye area. Below you can see where and how I apply this.

I know this is hard to tell but I apply this product basically everywhere under my eyes to cover everything as I love a good flawless finish overall. As you can see I go all the way up to my tear duct area as I have quite bad issues with darkness there. I always place this concealer there to correct the darkness to really brighten the eyes. I also apply some to the lid of my eye also to conceal any blue veins I have as salmon/orange based concealers are made to conceal blue tones on the skin.

Now this is the before and after of the application.

The picture above does not really highlight how dark my under eye area is due to the flash. As It was pretty dark outside when I took the pictures I could not use natural lights. But as you can tell, this concealer has camouflaged the blueness of my veins on the eye and also took away the look of the freckles and corrected the darkness of the eye towards the inner corners. This concealer has now camouflaged the darkness and made my face seem to be all colour corrected. I know this does look darker than my natural skin tone but as I apply this under my foundation, it will blend out under that anyways.

Bad points
This is the first point to pick up on any concealer and that's whether it creases or not. Sadly this concealer does crease whether you have used a setting powder or not. I find that If I do any touch ups during the day, I will use my fingers just to blend the creases away which does help but for £20.50 it kind of lets you down about. BUT however this is a cream concealer and this is normally the case with cream base concealers. Now above I did touch on that I only apply this under my foundation. Reason being is because I find it does nothing when I apply this over the top of my foundation. This concealer is said to highlight and camouflage the eyes or face over foundation but I only find that It camouflages and that's only under my makeup. I find that It does not highlight my under eye areas once applied over foundation and just adds heavy layers to my under eyes when applied over the top of foundation. Because of the formulation being thick, this makes your eye area feel heavy and tired despite it being easy to blend out.

Overall
I do like this concealer despite it's creasing affects. I do think it does the job of camouflaging the darker areas of my face but only under my makeup. I do not find that this highlights my face at all so would only re-purchase for that reason only. I do like how it gives me a flawless seamless finish. I do like the product and would recommend for more dry/normal skin so it does not crease as much but I dont think I would re purchase this as I want to try more colour correcting products to give me a flawless look.

Colour correcting help

If you want to adventure and try out colour correcting to the skin this is the place to start. Let me explain. What ever colour you are wanting to correct on the skin, look opposite of that colour on the chart and thats the colour you need. For example. If you suffer from redness of the skin you are looking for green based products or if you suffer from dull skin or dark under eyes then you should be looking at orange and yellow based products.

Green concealers/primers
Green concealers are used to neutralise the redness of the skin which is why this colour is perfect for covering any annoying acne or acne scaring in which you have. If you have a widespread of redness on the face from factors such as sunburn or rosacea then this colour would be ideal to target those problems.

Purple/violet concealer/primers
This toned concealer works best at eliminating any unwanted yellow undertones on your skin. People who have more pasty or yellow toned completions will love using this colour to add back the natural glow to the face.

Salmon coloured correctors (benefits ease paste section)
These are ideal for brightening areas of fatigueness of the face. Salmon based correctors are a mix of red yellows and oranges which all aids in brightening and correcting any dull areas of the skin, evening out the skin tone.

Yellow concealers/primers
This is the perfect colour for hiding any bruises with pruple/blue undertones and also veins. This colour is great for evening out your skin tone to brighten up the face for a natural glow before foundation. Depending on you skin tone this colour can also work as a good eye shadow base if you do not have a primer handy.

Orange concealers/primers
NOTE if you have lighter skin you want to stay away from this colour of corrector other than if you're doing facial contouring. This colour is mainly best for those with darker skin tones to colour correct the darkness and dullness of their skin or spots with deep colouration.

Neutral concealers/primers
If you have skin with no problem areas to hide then these will work fine for you without using any heavy colours on the face. Any regular concealer or primer will work just fine and do the job of what you are wanting it to do and cover the occasional spot. Just make sure you choose your exact shade or one lighter to get the full effect and you're all set.

Hope you have found this useful and if you have any recommendations on colour correcting products/pallets then please let me know! Thanks X
